Tarragon is a semi-evergreen perennial herbaceous plant, from the Asteraceae family. This aromatic plant is commonly cultivated in France for its fragrant leaves used as a condiment. Originating from Russia and more specifically from the vast steppes of Central Asia, Tarragon owes its name to the Latin word dracunculus which means “little dragon”.
In the theory of signatures, the sinuous roots of Tarragon, resembling snakes, led the ancients to believe that Tarragon was effective against snake bites, and more broadly against bites from venomous animals. In practice, Tarragon was already being used at the end of the first millennium for its beneficial effects on digestion.
