A formidable antibacterial that also promotes good bacteria, Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a species of herbaceous, perennial plant in the Lamiaceae family, also known as Wild Marjoram or Perennial Marjoram, among others. This small plant, about 50 cm tall, thrives in dry, arid soil. Its small green leaves have a distinctive taste and smell.
Oregano is sometimes confused with Marjoram (Origanum majorana) or “garden oregano”, with which it shares several characteristics, notably its medicinal and aromatic virtues.
Widely used in our kitchens to enhance the taste of sauces and meats, Origanum vulgaris has a distinctive flavor and odor.
In aromatherapy, the flowering tops are used to extract the precious essential oil, rich in carvacrol, and the hydrolat. These two products, derived from the distillation of Oregano, are both recommended for their antibacterial, antiparasitic, immunity-stimulating and digestive properties.
