Native to the forests of Europe, the lime tree has made its way into our public squares, courtyards and gardens. A sturdy tree, it can exceed 1,000 years in age and reach heights of 30 to 40 m.

Pliny the Elder already attributed diuretic properties to lime. In the 11th century, Hildegarde de Bingen recommended the use of its root powder to soothe the heart, which she associated with heat. Such was its importance in Germany that its name “linde” is the origin of the word “lindern”, meaning to soothe (pain).

Its light, soft, fine-grained wood has been widely used in religious sculpture and cabinetmaking. So many saints have been carved that the wood has become sacred.

In all mythologies, the lime tree is associated with femininity and love. Norse mythology associates it with Frigga, wife of Odin, goddess of maternal love and fertility.

It is also associated with Venus, the Roman goddess of love and femininity. Solid, luminous and ethereal, the lime tree reassures and comforts with a mother’s kindness and tenderness. The shape of its leaves also links it to the heart and its associated symbolism: love and friendship, fidelity and justice.
So let’s take another look at this soothing and reassuring lime tree, and let it accompany us on the path to letting go and serenity. A lovely journey ahead.

“A lime blossom fragrant at the end of the day is a rapture that leaves an indelible imprint on us and, in the depths of our joy of existence, traces a furrow of happiness that the softness of a July evening alone cannot explain Une gourmandise, Muriel Barbery
