Also known as “Indian Saffron”, Turmeric is native to Java, but is also found in Central America, the West Indies and Malaysia. It is a perennial plant in the same family as ginger (Zingiberaceae family), growing up to 1 m high, whose rhizome is used.
The rhizome, which is yellow-orange in color with a characteristic earthy fragrance, is one of the most important ingredients in curry. In Indian Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric is also used for its high curcumin content to treat certain liver ailments and skin diseases, particularly scabies.
