For the pleasure of your eyes, nose or taste buds, but also for your health, Patchouli deserves to be known. Patchouli is a small, dark-green, evergreen tropical shrub, about 50 cm high, belonging to the Lamiaceae family.
While Patchouli is best known for its use in perfumery and cosmetology, it also has very interesting virtues in aromatherapy. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is used for its digestive properties, to treat gastroenteritis and relieve joint pain. In the West Indies, it is also used as an infusion to aid digestion.
Patchouli leaf contains a sesquiterpene alcohol, patchoulol, which gives it its characteristic earthy scent. This molecule is known for its anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory and circulation-stimulating properties. To extract its essence, the branches are distilled by steam extraction. The result is Patchouli essential oil and, secondarily, Hydrolat.
