Rosemary is a shrub in the Lamiaceae family that grows wild in dry, rocky soils around the Mediterranean. It is easily recognized by its green twigs and small purple flowers, which are a delight to bees.
Highly aromatic, Rosemary has been used since Antiquity. Along with other plants, it was used in Ancient Egypt to embalm the dead. The Romans wore it as a crown to improve concentration. In short, Rosemary’s phytopharmaceutical virtues have been undisputed for centuries.

Rosemary is harvested from May to September. The flowering twigs are harvested and distilled after drying for around 3 days. Rosemary essential oil can vary greatly in composition and efficacy, depending on the variety and origin of the plant. It mainly contains monoterpenes, oxides and ketones, in varying proportions depending on the variety. Rosemary officinalis is rich in 1-8 cineole and alphapinene, while Rosemary verbenone, as its name suggests, contains another terpene, verbenone. These differences then have an effect on the virtues associated with each variety.
