An edible plant with recognized medicinal and cosmetic virtues, Roman chamomile is a 10-30 cm tall perennial of the Asteraceae family. Rare in France, Roman chamomile is grown in Anjou in its double variety. Its name comes from the Greek, referring to the fact that chamomile grows close to the ground (chamos) and that the fragrance of its barely-opened flowers is reminiscent of apples (melos). Roman because it was cultivated in Rome in the 16th and 17th centuries. A bitter tonic, this plant is generally recommended for its effects on the nervous and emotional spheres.
