Cistus is an evergreen shrub about 1 m high that grows in poor soils around the Mediterranean. Its leaves are covered with small oil glands from which a gum-resin, labdanum, is extracted. Highly fragrant, this gum was much sought-after in Antiquity and later in the Middle Ages for its perfume and soothing properties.
