The Plant Meadowsweet
Plant part: Flowering Summit
Origin: France
Endemic to Central Europe and growing up to two meters high, meadowsweet, formerly known as ulmaire or false spirea, belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is a perennial, melliferous plant that thrives on clay soils with good drainage and sun exposure. Our wet meadows are therefore their preferred location. It can be recognized by its often purple rachis and its leaves, composed of two to five pairs of double-toothed leaflets with interspersed leaflets. Its white flowers, with their distinctive fragrance, grow in corymbs. They are easily recognized by their characteristic scent. With its distinctive aroma, Meadowsweet is used in cooking, desserts and drinks to delight our taste buds. Meadowsweet has always been used for its analgesic, anticoagulant, antipyretic and diuretic properties. It has since been found to contain salicylates such as methyl salicylate, flavonoids and tannins. To make the most of its benefits, we use its flowering tops, picked locally in July/August, to extract a hydrolate.

When I'm in a feverish state
My testimony I’m very rarely ill. No doubt partly due to the fact that I’m “bathed” in hydrolats and essential oils and that I live in the countryside, in a protected environment. But almost every time I go to Paris for a few days for trade shows, I catch a cold or the beginnings of a “flu”. To help me combat febrile states in these urban environments, I call on meadowsweet! My tip Whenever I feel feverish (headache, burning eyes, aching muscles), I take meadowsweet hydrosol. I try to drink...
