Myrtle is a typical scrub shrub in the Myrtaceae family, 1 to 3 m high. This white-flowered shrub is nicknamed “Poet’s Shrub”. Evergreen (evergreen leaves), it grows in dense bushes on the coast of Mediterranean Europe, up to an altitude of 800m. A symbol of glory and happy love, it was woven into crowns for heroes and brides. In religious cults, the wood from its stems was used as incense. Myrtle was also used for beauty care. The twigs are still used in basketry. Distillation of the flowers and leaves yielded a highly renowned eau d’ange. In Corsica, Myrtle twigs are used to season certain dishes. Myrtle berries are distilled to make a liqueur called Myrte.
Myrtle is rich in 1-8 cineole. It has expectorant, antiseptic and tonic properties. It is a very interesting essence in phytotherapy and aromatherapy.
