In the deciduous forests of Canada, there is only one large conifer: the Hemlock. The Hemlock is one of the few conifers with the ability to regrow from old wood, i.e. to produce new shoots even after severe pruning.
Native North Americans used the leafy twigs of the eastern hemlock to make tea and take steam baths. Tea brewed with inner bark was a remedy for colds, fevers, diarrhea, stomach aches and scurvy. The needles are also used to prepare infusions.
