Clary Sage (Salvia Sclarea) is a hardy and perennial plant, valued since Antiquity for its qualities. Its Latin name ‘sclarea’ evokes clarity, and it was formerly nicknamed ‘all-good’ or ‘wound herb’, attesting to its high regard.

Clary Sage is a hardy perennial with a musky fragrance. This beautiful plant is distinguished from other types of sage by its spikes of pale blue flowers.
The etymology of the word itself sheds light on the virtues attributed to this plant since Antiquity. The word sage comes from the Latin “salvare”, meaning to save, and the word sclarea comes from the Latin “clarus”, meaning clear, luminous.
Although it belongs to the same category as Sage officinale, its properties and appearance are more reminiscent of Lavender (also a Lamiaceae). Beyond the difference in appearance, Clary Sage has the enormous advantage of containing no Thujone. This makes it easier to use than its cousin, Sage officinale. Like the latter, it has a useful action in certain ailments specific to women, such as menstrual cycle disorders and, later, menopausal symptoms. Rich in linalyl acetate, Clary Sage essential oil, like Lavender essential oils, has soothing, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.
