Cypress is a conifer belonging to the Cupressaceae family, which can reach heights of 30 meters or more. Native to northern Iran, Cyprus and Crete, it is now widespread throughout the Mediterranean region. It is cultivated for ornamental purposes throughout southern Europe, and also flourishes in our latitudes, including in the “wild”.
Historically, Cypress was already mentioned in Assyrian writings and held an important place in the funeral rites of the ancients. In ancient Greece, lung patients were sent to Cypress forests.
Its wood is highly fragrant and rot-proof. Its leafy twigs and cones are rich in pinene. This terpene has antiseptic and antibacterial properties of particular interest in aromatherapy.
