The Plant
Plant part: Rhizome
Origin: Madagascar
Native to India and Africa, ginger is a perennial plant in the Zingiberaceae family, like turmeric. It grows to around one metre in height, has beautiful orchid-like flowers and reproduces via its rhizomes. Highly aromatic, ginger was imported to Europe during the Middle Ages, where it was highly prized, but never cultivated. Beyond its flavor, it was already recommended for weak stomachs.
Ginger rhizomes are still used in phytotherapy, fresh or dried, in pieces or ground into powder. In aromatherapy, Ginger Essential Oil, rich in sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes, is particularly recommended for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, immunostimulant and antioxidant properties.
