The Plant
Plant part: Flowering Summit
Origin: France
A formidable antibacterial that also promotes good bacteria, Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a species of herbaceous, perennial plant in the Lamiaceae family, also known as Wild Marjoram or Perennial Marjoram, among others. This small plant, about 50 cm tall, thrives in dry, arid soil. Its small green leaves have a distinctive taste and smell.
Oregano is sometimes confused with Marjoram (Origanum majorana) or “garden oregano”, with which it shares several characteristics, notably its medicinal and aromatic virtues.
Widely used in our kitchens to enhance the taste of sauces and meats, Origanum vulgaris has a distinctive flavor and odor.
In aromatherapy, the flowering tops are used to extract the precious essential oil, rich in carvacrol, and the hydrolat. These two products, derived from the distillation of Oregano, are both recommended for their antibacterial, antiparasitic, immunity-stimulating and digestive properties.
What are the benefits of Oregano?
Oregano is a plant with a “thousand” virtues, particularly for relieving ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) ailments, skin conditions, as well as digestive disorders. In case of gastrointestinal problems, Oregano is also recommended for its antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory effects that alleviate the symptoms of parasitic infections. In summary, Oregano is a plant with multiple health benefits. It easily integrates into your daily diet to take advantage of its therapeutic virtues.
Common questions
How to use Oregano?
Often used to season pizzas, oregano is a powerful antibacterial. In aromatherapy and phytotherapy, it is recommended for its beneficial effects on the digestive system and immunity. It can be used in several ways:
-Essential Oil: Always diluted to avoid irritation, Oregano Essential Oil is very powerful and should be used with caution (adults only):
1. cutaneous: Essential Oil can be massaged into the skin to aid digestion and combat skin and ENT disorders;
2. orally: this oil can be diluted on a carrier for internal use. This method of use should be very short-lived, preferably under the supervision of a therapist. Oregano essential oil is also available in capsule form, for use as a course of treatment;
3. diffusion or inhalation: helps tone the body.
-Hydrolat : Hydrolat d’Origan can be used topically or as an inhalant. Milder than essential oil, it can be used by more sensitive people.
-Infusion: Alone or in a blend of herbs, Oregano is an essential digestive infusion. To infuse, place a teaspoon of Oregano in a teapot, then pour in simmering water. Leave to infuse for a few minutes before drinking.
