Common questions

What is the difference between Sage officinalis and Clary sage?

The common sage (Salvia officinalis) and the clary sage (Salvia sclarea) are two plants of the Salvia genus. The common sage originates from the Mediterranean basin, now widely cultivated worldwide. It prefers dry and sunny soils. The clary sage is native to Europe and Central Asia. The common sage has evergreen, gray-green leaves, with a slightly fuzzy texture. Its flowers are generally blue, purple, or white. The clary sage is distinguished by its large green leaves, sometimes with a purplish tint, and its robust stems. The flowers, larger than those of the common sage, can be white or pink and are grouped in large inflorescences.

The common sage is often used in cooking as a herb, it also has medicinal properties, notably antiseptic and digestive.
The clary sage is highly prized in aromatherapy for its essential oil, which is reputed for its relaxing effects and as a hormonal regulator, particularly in women. It is preferred over the common sage because it does not contain thujone.

What are the effects of clary sage?

Clary Sage is highly valued for its effects on female balance due to its impact on hormonal regulation. The hydrosol of Clary Sage can thus limit hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. The hydrosol of Clary Sage is also renowned for its benefits for the skin by regulating sebum production or perspiration.

The Plant Clary Sage

Clary Sage
Latin Name: Salvia Sclarea

Plant part: Flower

Origin: France

The Clary Sage is a perennial, hardy plant, with a musky scent. This beautiful plant stands out from other Sage plants, with its spikes of pale blue flowers.
The etymology of the word itself sheds light on the virtues attributed to this plant since antiquity. The word Sage comes from the Latin “salvare” which means to save, and the word clary comes from the Latin word “clarus”, in other words, clear, bright.
Although it belongs to the same category as the Common Sage, its properties and appearance are more reminiscent of Lavender (which is also a Lamiaceae). Beyond the difference in appearance, the Clary Sage has the enormous advantage of not containing Thujone. This simplifies its use compared to its cousin, the Common Sage. Like the latter, it has a useful action in certain conditions specific to women, such as menstrual cycle disorders and later, menopause symptoms. Rich in linalyl acetate, the essential oil of Clary Sage, like the essential oils of Lavender, has soothing, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory virtues.
