My story
My companion doesn’t take much time to shave in the morning, so he does it just about anywhere, most of the time without shaving cream. The blade on hard hair is not tender! As a result, he often ends up with small cuts and irritated facial skin. But don’t panic, a simple gesture with cistus hydrosol makes all this disappear.
My tip
As an aftershave, the reflex is to use rockrose hydrosol. My husband puts the equivalent of a teaspoon in the palm of his hand and spreads it over his face. It’s more convenient to use a spray bottle or a washable cotton pad with 1 to 2 ml of rockrose hydrosol dabbed onto the face. This is doubly beneficial. In addition to the haemostatic effect of cistus, you’ll also benefit from its firming, anti-ageing effect on the skin.
The scent of cistus leaves no one indifferent. It is one of the rare plants to have a slightly “animal”, masculine scent. Some find it unpleasant, while others find it totally addictive, which is the case with my companion.
For those who are bothered by the smell, they can replace the rockrose hydrosol with yarrow hydrosol (see card 1), in the same way, applied all over the face.
In the case of larger cuts, for which this simple gesture would not be sufficient, a drop of essential oil of rockrose can be applied directly to the cut. Bleeding is stopped almost immediately.
What does phytotherapy have to say?
Cistus is highly effective against bleeding, thanks to the complementary action of its monoterpene ketones, which heal, and its monoterpene carbides, which haemostatic. Cistus essential oil promotes blood coagulation and strengthens the venous and capillary circulatory system. Cistus hydrosol tones skin tissue, limits the effects of skin aging by firming the skin, and enhances healing and regeneration. The antispasmodic effects of rockrose hydrosol have also been demonstrated in animals (Aziz et al., Fitoterapia, September 2006), confirming the traditional use of rockrose for intestinal pain in certain countries.
Did you know?
For a small cut, cleansing the skin and wound with rockrose hydrosol is sufficient. However, for a deeper wound, it’s important to rinse well to prevent germs from lodging in the wound
I use hydrosols SAFELY
There are no particular contraindications to using cistus hydrosol, as this is a classic cosmetic application. The same applies to cistus essential oil. On the other hand, the oral route should be avoided for cistus essential oil (although it is very interesting for the hydrolat).
CISTUS LADANIFERUS Cistus
Cistus ladanifera is a small evergreen shrub about 1 m high, growing in poor soils around the Mediterranean. The flowers, white with a red spot at the base of the petals, have a crinkled appearance. The leaves are covered with small oil glands from which a highly fragrant gum-resin, labdanum, emerges, contributing to the scent of the Corsican scrubland.
