The Plant
Plant part: Flowering Summit
Origin: France
Native to South Africa, the Geranium was imported to Europe in the early 17th century, mainly for ornamental purposes. Geranium rosat is a cultivar that was first grown in the Grasse region of Provence to extract a rose-like essential oil for use in perfumery.
Fearing frost, crops had to be renewed every year. Growers soon sought out milder climates and planted them in warmer regions such as Reunion. Our rose geranium is a quality native to Reunion Island, “Bourbon” meaning “of the islands”. With its rose-like fragrance, it is an essential oil much appreciated in cosmetics, particularly for anti-aging treatments. Thanks to their citronellol and geraniol content, Geranium essential oil and hydrosol are also known to repel mosquitoes.
What are the benefits of Bourbon Geranium?
Highly valued in perfumery and cosmetics, Geranium is a plant with multiple benefits for the skin. Thanks to its healing properties, it is ideal for reducing scars and promoting cell regeneration. Its effect on rosacea and couperose also makes it a top choice for soothing redness and skin irritations. Moreover, its antifungal properties make it an effective remedy against fungal infections, while its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic virtues allow for the treatment of wounds and skin infections.
Common questions
How to use Geranium?
Beyond its ornamental interest, Geranium is an ally of skin health and beauty. It can be used in several ways:
- Essential Oil: Always diluted to avoid irritation, Geranium Essential Oil is used for diffusion only, as a mosquito repellent. It is mainly used orally and dermally:
1. Cutaneous: To promote healing and blood circulation, Geranium Essential Oil can be applied diluted in a lotion, cream or vegetable oil such as Apricot Kernel Oil, and massaged into the skin;
2. Oral use: this oil can be diluted on a carrier for internal use. This method of use, reserved for adults, must be very short-lived.
-Hydrolat : Hydrolat can be taken orally or diffused. It is suitable for cutaneous use to soothe the skin, particularly in cases of couperose or rosacea. It is also suitable for rebalancing sebum production, purifying and moisturizing oily skin.
-Infusion: Geranium can be used as an infusion. Place a handful of berries in a teapot, then pour in simmering water. Leave to infuse for a few minutes before drinking.
What’s the difference between Geranium Bourbon essential oil and Geranium Rosat essential oil? There are many different types of geranium (Pelargonium). The ornamental geranium, common in France, is a different type from the rose geranium (Pelargonium graveolens). This latter category is further subdivided into several types of Rose Geranium. There are, for example, Geranium Rosat Bourbon, which we have chosen to use at Essenciagua for its quality, and Geranium Rosat Egypt.
Beyond the difference in origin, these two types of geranium have a very distinct scent.
