GEMMO

Gemmotherapy

Gemmotherapy

Gemmotherapy is based on the use of young plant tissues - mainly buds, but also sometimes young shoots or rootlets - harvested at a key moment in their development, when they concentrate specific active substances mobilized for plant growth. These tissues are rich in enzymes, nucleic acids and plant regulators, making them particularly interesting extracts to explore.

Although scientific publications are still few and far between, their traditional use, which is well established in Europe, provides a solid foundation on which to begin integrating them into a natural approach.

The macerates offered by Essenciagua are developed in partnership with Vesunna, a company specializing in the artisanal processing of fresh plants. This partnership combines the know-how of a committed producer with Essenciagua's desire to offer high-quality, living, accessible phytotherapy.

We present here three of the most frequently used buds, so that you can confidently discover the world of gemmotherapy, based on a long tradition of use.

Energizing the body

Well known for its antioxidant-rich black berries, blackcurrant is also a mainstay of gemmotherapy. But it's its buds that interest us here: young structures, concentrated in active substances mobilized by the plant to grow and adapt to its environment. In traditional use, they are found in numerous formulas designed to support the body when it is mobilized or weakened.

Traditional uses:

  • Transient fatigue or convalescence
  • Reactivity to pollen or dust
  • Sensations of stiffness or inflammatory terrain
  • Support for the immune system

Blackcurrant bud is often described as a plant cortisone-like, meaning that it would act in a way comparable to certain molecules produced by the adrenal glands, but without the side effects of synthetic treatments. This makes it a grounding support in periods when we feel tired, numb, or prone to a form of "physiological sluggishness

.

Biochemically speaking, this bud contains flavonoids, proanthocyanidols, as well as natural anti-inflammatory substances. It is sometimes used as a tonic base in blends with other buds, to which it comes to provide an overall supportive dynamic.

A cultivated plant that retains its potential: Blackcurrant is a frequently cultivated species, found in many gardens or small local farms. Unlike other medicinal plants, which lose potency under intensive cultivation, blackcurrants retain an interesting content of active ingredients, as long as they are picked fresh and processed quickly. At Essenciagua, this direct link between the fresh plant and immediate extraction means that the richness of the bud is preserved to the full.

Use recommendations It is often recommended to take it in the morning, over a period of 3 weeks to 1 month. It can be used alone, or in synergy with more targeted buds. As a precaution, it is not recommended for pregnant women without medical advice, due to its potential stimulant effect.

Balancing belly and mind

The emblematic tree of Mediterranean regions, the fig tree is often associated with peace and quiet digestion. In gemmotherapy, its buds are valued for their regulatory action on the enteric nervous system, that "second brain zone" nestled in our belly. They are classically proposed in situations of chronic stress, functional digestive disorders or disturbed sleep.

Traditional uses

  • Stress and nervousness
  • Difficulty falling asleep, waking up at night
  • Digestive somatizations (anxiety-related stomach aches)
  • Mental ruminations or inner turmoil

The fig tree is a central bud in a gentle approach to emotional regulation. It is sometimes considered a modulator of the limbic system, a brain area involved in emotional memory and stress responses. It is recommended for both sensitive adults and children, particularly when psychic tensions translate into somatic disorders.

Biochemically, it is said to contain digestive enzymes, phenolic acids and other compounds likely to promote relaxation of the digestive system and the brain-gut axis.

Harvesting with respect for the tree's rhythm: Harvesting fig buds calls for particular care: they are often the terminal bud, the one that carries the future growth of the branch. Too much or poorly distributed harvesting can alter the tree's morphology, even slowing its vigor.

At Essenciagua with Vesuna, harvesting is carried out by hand, in a reasoned manner, taking only a small proportion of the buds present. This treatment is part of a global approach to respecting plants, which aims to preserve the quality of the extracts as much as the longevity of the plants themselves.

Tips for use: It is often taken at the end of the day, to accompany a return to calm. In cases of prolonged stress, a 3-week course can be beneficial. It goes very well with lime blossom to promote more peaceful sleep.

An ally for peaceful nights

Lime blossom has long been a plant associated with sleep and soothing. In gemmotherapy, we use its buds - not its flowers - for their deeper action, which is both neuromodulatory and mildly sedative. It's a bud of choice to accompany sleep disorders, agitation or states of inner tension.

Traditional uses:

  • Difficult falling asleep
  • Nervousness, mental or physical agitation
  • Mild hyperactivity in children
  • Diffuse anxiety states

Not to be confused with flower infusions: Linden is often known to the general public for its flower infusions, used to calm children or promote sleep. In gemmotherapy, it's the buds, not the flowers, that are used. Their action is more global, more focused on regulating the vegetative nervous system, and does not rely on the same molecules. It is therefore not a simple 'lime blossom concentrate', but a different extract with specific properties.

Lime blossom bud is reputed to regulate the neurovegetative system, i.e. the balance between stimulation and relaxation. It does not cause daytime drowsiness, but helps to regain a form of soothed inner rhythm. It is often used in children, but also in adults during periods of emotional overload.

Tips for use:Take in the evening, about an hour before bedtime. Can be used as a course of treatment or occasionally during periods of tension. Well tolerated in family use, subject to medical advice in case of concomitant treatment.

Why honey in macerates?

Contrary to the classic formulation of macerates, which often uses a water-alcohol-glycerine mixture, the extracts offered by Essenciagua are made from fresh plants, using a triple extraction with water, alcohol and honey. This process, implemented by Vesunna, is based on several objectives:

  • Honey acts as a natural preservative, limiting microbial proliferation.
  • It facilitates the extraction of certain water-soluble compounds, which alcohol alone would not capture.
  • It is part of an artisanal approach, rooted in a quest for maximum naturalness, without the addition of industrial excipients such as vegetable glycerine.

This process reflects a desire for closeness to the plant, and particular attention to the quality of the extractive medium, often neglected in standard products.

Gemmotherapy offers a lively, subtle gateway into the world of plant extracts. By choosing buds derived from traditional use and produced using a demanding artisanal method, Essenciagua offers high-quality macerates that are both simple to use and rich in meaning.

We are delighted to be able to offer these extracts thanks to a trusting partnership with a committed producer who shares our demand for quality and our respect for plants.

Whether to accompany a restless sleep, a moment of stress or a drop in energy, these three extracts - blackcurrant, fig and lime - are an excellent introduction to gemmotherapy, and an invitation to explore plants in a new way.
