The Plant
Plant part: Zest
Origin: Italy
Native to China, the Mandarin tree owes its name to its color, which recalls that of the tunic worn by mandarins, China’s highest dignitaries. The Mandarin tree is a member of the Rutaceae family. This small tree with its rounded tassel can reach 3 to 6 m in height. It usually blooms between March and April. It is then adorned with small, fragrant white flowers, before developing its fruits, which ripen around December.
Obtained by steam distillation of the fruit’s fresh pericarp, mandarin oil has anti-irritant properties. Known for its limonene content, it is particularly suitable for people prone to anxiety. This essence is also perfect for babies and young children, to help them fall asleep. Mandarin essence has virtually the same properties as Sweet Orange. However, Mandarin is more effective at bedtime, and is recommended for younger children.
