The Plant
Plant part: Needle Branch
Origin: Portugal
Pinus pinaster is a species of conifer in the Pinaceae family. It can reach 30 m in height. It reaches maturity around 40 or 50 years of age and can live up to 500 years. Native to the central and western Mediterranean, it tolerates poor soils, but needs light, warmth and a certain amount of atmospheric humidity. It can, however, withstand summer drought. Pinus pinaster is widespread in southern France, and is cultivated in the Landes region for its ability to bind sand, as well as for its wood, which is used in carpentry, paper-making and joinery. In the past, its resin was harvested for turpentine. Like all conifers, Pinus pinaster is an excellent antiseptic.
