Originating from South Africa, the Geranium was imported into Europe from the early 17th century, mainly for ornamental purposes. The Rose Geranium is a cultivar whose cultivation spread in the Grasse region, in Provence, to extract an essential oil with a scent close to that of the rose, intended for perfumery.
Fearing frost, the crops had to be renewed each year. Very quickly, producers sought more clement climates and established them in regions with a warmer climate such as Reunion. Our rose geranium is a quality originating from Reunion Island, “Bourbon” meaning “from the islands”.
