The Plant
Botanical Family: Fagaceae
Plant part: Bud
Origin: France
The Pedunculate Oak can be recognized by its wavy leaves with two auricles around an almost non-existent petiole. The acorns, set in their cupules, are borne on long peduncles, hence the name.
Adaptable to all types of soil, it is a common tree in our forests, with a powerful straight trunk topped by a tortuous crown. But it’s on its own that it spreads out, majestically, developing large horizontal branches on a stocky trunk.
Its hard, dense wood earns it the Latin name “robur”, meaning solidity, strength, energy, from which derives the adjective “roboratif”, from the Latin “robare”, to fortify.
For the Celts, it was the sacred tree par excellence, the gateway between earth and sky, the one that offered hospitality, the temple, and the druid dru-, tree, oak, and -uid, knowledge, the guardian of knowledge and wisdom.
Over the centuries, it has inspired courage, strength and endurance, and a crown of oak leaves was worn by valiant warriors.
