The Plant
Plant part: Flowering Summit
Origin: France
Lemon balm, whose name evokes honey, is one of our best melliferous plants. A member of the Lamiaceae family, it grows in clumps in southern European gardens at altitudes of up to 1000m. As early as the 10th century, the Arabs used it as a remedy for melancholy. Even today, Lemon Balm is used in the composition of Chartreuse and Eau de Mélisse des Carmes, two preparations that both claim to be true “Elixir of Health”.
Lemon balm is an excellent soothing plant. It is both recommended for aiding digestion and combating melancholy.
At Essenciagua, we distill it at the end of the summer season. This is the moment when, having accumulated essential oil throughout the summer, it reaches an optimal quantity. During distillation of the Essential Oil, we also extract Lemon Balm Hydrosol. The latter is particularly suitable for children and infants to aid digestion.
