Originating from Eastern Europe and the Middle East, the Matricaria, also known as German Chamomile, is now widespread throughout almost all of Europe and willingly colonizes abandoned lands as well as untreated fields. Whether wild or cultivated, Chamomile is harvested in the summer, in full bloom. It owes its name to the Greek chamos (because it grows close to the ground) and melos (because its flowers have a scent similar to that of an apple). The genus name Matricaria comes from the Latin matrix, -icis “1. reproductive, female, 2. matrix” and the suffix -arius, -aria, alluding to the virtues of the plant.
