Matricaria German chamomile

The Plant

Latin Name: Matricaria Recutita

Plant part: Flowering Summit

Origin: France

Native to Eastern Europe and the Middle East, Matricaria, also known as German Chamomile, is now widespread throughout most of Europe, colonizing neglected land and untreated fields. Whether wild or cultivated, Chamomile is harvested in summer, when it is in full bloom. Its name comes from the Greek chamos (because it grows close to the ground) and melos (because its flowers have an apple-like fragrance). The genus name Matricaria comes from the Latin matrix, -icis “1. reproductive, female, 2. matrix” and the suffix -arius, -aria, alluding to the plant’s virtues. Finally, it’s the plant of blond hair!

What are the benefits of Matricaria (German Chamomile)?

The German Chamomile is known for its anti-inflammatory and soothing virtues. It is particularly effective in relieving respiratory allergies, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help reduce inflammation of the respiratory tract. When applied externally, this plant is also useful in treating eczema and psoriasis, two skin conditions that cause itching and irritation. Redness and itching can also be soothed when the plant is used as an infusion or in the form of essential oil.
