How to use Basil?
Like tarragon, basil is an aromatic plant. It is used fresh or dried to flavor savory dishes, sauces and certain desserts.
Thanks to its antispasmodic and digestive properties, Basil has been used for centuries in phytotherapy and aromatherapy. Depending on the desired effect, it is used :
- as a drink: as an infusion or hydrolat. Basil can be taken as an infusion, hydrolat or mixed with other plants to aid digestion;
- for diffusion, by the skin or orally: For these uses, Basil can be used in the form of Essential Oil. It can be diluted in a vegetable oil, then massaged into the stomach to aid digestion, or applied to the skin. A few drops of Essential Oil in a dish can also give it a very pleasant fragrance.
- as a spray: Basil Hydrolat can be used as a tonic to gently moisturize the skin.
When to sow Basil ?
Basil should be sown in spring, between March and June. After a few weeks (about a month and a half), the plants can be transplanted into larger pots or in the garden, still in full sun, but spaced about 30 cm apart.
Which is the best Basil variety?
There are several varieties of basil. In France, Basil grand vert is the most widespread. However, there are other varieties, such as Fine Basil, Thai Basil, Purple Basil and Lemon Basil. Each variety has its own distinctive taste and color.
How to care for your basil plant?
