Also known as “Indian Saffron”, Turmeric is native to Java, but is also found in Central America, the West Indies and Malaysia. It is a perennial plant in the same family as ginger (Zingiberaceae family), growing up to 1 m high, whose rhizome is used.
The rhizome, which is yellow-orange in color with a characteristic earthy fragrance, is one of the most important ingredients in curry. In Indian Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric is also used for its high curcumin content to treat certain liver ailments and skin diseases, particularly scabies.

How to use Turmeric?
Turmeric has many uses. In cooking, we use the whole rhizome or the powder extracted from it to flavor dishes or drinks. Fresh turmeric is also used to make juice.
Turmeric is used in phytotherapy and aromatherapy:
- In capsules: Turmeric can be taken as a dietary supplement, in combination with other plants. This method of use should preferably be carried out with the advice of a therapist.
- As a decoction or infusion: place a teaspoonful of powder or a few slices of Turmeric in a cup, then pour over simmering water. Leave to infuse for around ten minutes before drinking. Turmeric is often used in combination with pepper or ginger to increase its absorption by the body.
- In Essential Oil: Add a few drops of Turmeric Essential Oil to a carrier oil, then gently massage into painful areas (joints, stomach). The Oil can also be added to a lotion or cream before applying to the skin.
In cosmetics, Turmeric is used as a mask or in moisturizing creams.
Does Turmeric make the stomach swell?
Turmeric stimulates bile secretion, facilitating digestion and limiting bloating and other digestive disorders.
