My testimony
At trade fairs, I spend the whole day standing behind the stand, moving very little. As a result, my legs often feel heavy and swollen at the end of the day. I particularly remember an outdoor trade show in June. It was a very hot day. In the afternoon, my legs started to feel really swollen and painful. I couldn’t go for a walk to stimulate the circulation, but I had everything I needed on hand to relieve the pain.
My tip
When my legs feel heavy, I take a small 60-ml pump bottle and mix 20 ml of mastic tree hydrosol, 10 ml of witch hazel hydrosol and 5 drops of peppermint EO. I shake the bottle and spray the mixture onto my legs. The sensation of freshness and lightness is almost immediate. As this is an aqueous blend, it can be used in any circumstance.
As a preventive measure, I take a course of Lentisque hydrosol 2 weeks before the start of the show. I mix 3 tablespoons of mastic hydrosol in a 1-liter bottle of water and drink it throughout the day.
And the footbaths are very effective and pleasant. In the evening, if I need to, I prepare a basin of lukewarm water into which I add the equivalent of a small glass of mastic hydrosol and a small glass of peppermint hydrosol, and soak my feet for about ten minutes.
What does phytotherapy say?
In most cases, the sensation of heavy legs is linked to venous insufficiency, as the veins in the legs are not sufficiently effective in returning blood to the heart. To remedy this mainly mechanical problem, you can elevate your legs, massage them or take a walk to stimulate circulation. Aroma also offers a number of solutions to this kind of problem. Pistachio is the vein and lymphatic decongestant par excellence, a favorite for venous circulation problems (also varicose veins and hemorrhoids).
Witch hazel is a well-known vasoconstrictor that also protects vein walls. Cold is well known for stimulating blood circulation, which peppermint does wonderfully, with its icy effect.
Did you know?
Circulatory problems in general (such as heavy or swollen legs at the end of the day) can be caused by a sluggish liver, which can easily be stimulated by a 3-week internal treatment with lovage hydrosol, 3 tablespoons a day in water
I use hydrolats SAFELY
This blend is safe to use over several weeks. Peppermint essential oil should be replaced by the hydrolat during pregnancy. If heavy or swollen legs persist, seek medical advice.
PISTACIA LENTISCUS Pistachio mastic tree
Pistachio is an evergreen shrub, 1 m to 4 m tall, found in arid areas around the Mediterranean. It’s also known as the “mastic tree” because of the highly fragrant gum extracted from its trunk. This gum is used in confectionery and liqueurs
liqueurs. Distillation of the berry twigs yields a precious essential oil, highly effective for venous and lymphatic disorders responsible for organ congestion (veins, prostate, sinuses). The hydrolat, much more affordable, has the same properties as the essential oil, as well as an astringent action for oily skin.
